Evaluating Aerosol Indirect Effect Through Marine Stratocumulus Clouds
نویسنده
چکیده
During the last decade much attention has been focused on anthropogenic aerosols and their radiative influence on the global climate. Charlson et al. (1992) and Penner et al. (1994) have demonstrated that tropospheric aerosols and particularly anthropogenic sulfate aerosols may significantly contribute to the radiative forcing exerting a cooling influence on climate which is comparable in magnitude to greenhouse forcing, but opposite in sign.

The Marine Stratus/Stratocumulus Experiment (MASE): Aerosolcloud relationships in marine stratocumulus
[1] The Marine Stratus/Stratocumulus Experiment (MASE) field campaign was undertaken in July 2005 off the coast of Monterey, California to evaluate aerosol-cloud relationships in the climatically important regime of eastern Pacific marine stratocumulus. Aerosol and cloud properties were measured onboard the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely-Piloted Aircraft Studies (CIRPAS) Twin Otter aircr...
متن کاملEvaluating the Seasonal Variations of the Indirect Effect of Sulfate Aerosols Using Observation-Derived Cloud Climatology
We evaluate the "indirect," i.e., cloud-induced, shortwave effect of anthropogenic sulfate aerosols in marine stratocumulus clouds. The latter have a pronounced climatic effect due to their high reflectivity compared to the sea surface, large global coverage, and near-absence of greenhouse effects. The indirect effect is thought to be less pronounced in continental clouds, in part because these...
متن کاملStudy of the Aerosol Indirect Effect by Large-Eddy Simulation of Marine Stratocumulus
A total of 98 three-dimensional large-eddy simulations (LESs) of marine stratocumulus clouds covering both nighttime and daytime conditions were performed to explore the response of cloud optical depth ( ) to various aerosol number concentrations (Na 50–2500 cm ) and the covarying meteorological conditions (large-scale divergence rate and SST). The idealized First International Satellite Cloud ...
متن کاملEffect of coarse marine aerosols on stratocumulus clouds
[1] In contrast to fine anthropogenic aerosols (radii ∼<0.5 mm), large aerosol particles are thought to enhance cloud droplet growth, promote precipitation formation and reduce cloud albedo. While shown in cloud simulation models, the impact of coarse aerosols on marine stratocumulus clouds lacks observational evidence. Here, by combining data from AMSR‐E and MODIS, both aboard NASA’s satellite...
متن کاملMarine Aerosols: Hygroscopocity and Aerosol-Cloud Relationships
The long-term goal of this project is to predict the radiative properties of the marine atmosphere based on aerosol and cloud properties. OBJECTIVES The objective of the project is to improve our understanding of the role of aerosols in the Marine Boundary Layer and our ability to simulate marine stratocumulus clouds as a function of aerosol properties and the large-scale meterology. APPROACH T...
